Delivery is the cost people forget and the one most likely to make a cheap advertised day rate expensive. It is also the part of the job with the most ways to go wrong on the morning, so it is worth thinking about before you book rather than when the lorry arrives.
How it is priced
Yards quote delivery and collection as two legs, or sometimes as one combined figure. Expect from £35 each way locally, rising with distance. A yard forty miles away may quote three times a yard five miles away for exactly the same machine, which is why the nearest depot usually wins even if its day rate is slightly higher.
Where the lorry actually stops
Machines arrive on a trailer or a beavertail lorry, which needs somewhere legal and level to unload. On a residential street that is usually fine. On a narrow lane, a red route, or a controlled parking zone it may not be, and in central areas a parking suspension is sometimes required. Tell us if access is awkward and it will be factored in rather than discovered.
Getting the machine to the work
Delivery gets the machine to your address, not necessarily to the back garden. The driver will normally track it from the drop point to the work area if the route is passable, but they are not obliged to dismantle a fence. Measure the route first and check the price guide for machine widths.
Collection
Collection is normally the following working day for a day hire, so a Friday hire often means a Monday collection at no extra charge. Confirm it, because some yards charge a weekend day.
