Choosing a machine

Every machine, with the numbers that matter

Transport width is the figure that decides whether a digger reaches your garden. A standard side gate is about 90 cm, so a 1.5t at 98 cm will not pass one without the door off.

Check the access before you check the price

Measure the narrowest point the machine has to pass, gate posts and all, and the deepest part of the dig. The smallest machine that clears both is almost always the cheapest hire, because it is also the cheapest to deliver.

Measure the gap itself, not the gate opening. Posts, downpipes and a bin store all eat into it.

What mini digger hire actually costs

Mini digger hire in the UK runs from about £75 a day for a 0.8t micro to £210 a day for an 8t machine, self drive and machine only. Delivery and collection is charged separately, typically around £35 each way from the nearest depot.

Most sites in this market quote on request. We publish rates because a price you cannot see is a price you cannot check. Three costs are commonly left out of a headline figure, and all three are worth confirming in writing before you book.

Delivery and collection. Priced by distance from the depot, usually from £35 each way. On a one day hire this can be a third of the total.

Fuel. Almost never included. Machines normally arrive full and are expected back full.

Operator. Roughly £250 to £300 a day on top of the machine, which is often cheaper than a mistake on a drainage run if you have not driven one before.

Weekend rates run above midweek, and second and third days typically bill at about two thirds of the first day, so a three day hire is rarely three times a day rate.

Three steps

How hiring works

  1. 01

    Tell us the job

Postcode, what you are digging and the dates. Thirty seconds, two fields to start.

  2. 02

    We match a local yard

Your job goes to plant hire depots that genuinely deliver to that postcode, not a national call centre.

  3. 03

    Delivered and collected

Price fixed in writing before the machine moves. Delivered to the address, collected when you are done.

What you get either way

  • No deposit Standard across the yards we work with for domestic hires.
  • Delivery and collection Priced by distance from the depot and confirmed before you commit.
  • Serviced and checked Machines come with current inspection and tracks in working order.
  • Operator on request Around £250 to £300 a day if you would rather not drive it yourself.

Self drive or operated

Do you need someone to drive it?

You do not need any licence to operate a mini digger on private land. On a commercial site a CPCS or NPORS card is normally required. If you have never used one, an operator at roughly £250 to £300 a day is usually cheaper than the damage a first attempt can do to a drain run.

An operator is charged on top of the machine, not instead of it.

Self drive suits garden landscaping, footings for a shed or garage base, and clearing. Take an operator for anything near services, on a slope, or where you are digging blind. Ask the yard to walk you round the controls at handover, which they will do as standard.

Common questions

How much does it cost to hire a mini digger?

Will a mini digger fit through my garden gate?

A standard side gate is around 90 cm. A 0.8t micro is about 70 cm wide so it passes; a 1.5t at roughly 98 cm will not without taking the gate off. Measure your narrowest point first and use the access checker on this page.

Do I need a licence to drive a mini digger?

Not on private land. On a commercial site a CPCS or NPORS card is normally required. The yard will walk you round the controls at handover as standard.

How deep can a mini digger dig?

About 1.7 m for a 0.8t micro, 2.3 m for a 1.5t mini, 2.8 m for a 3t midi and up to 4.3 m for an 8t. Choose on dig depth as well as access width, since the smallest machine that fits may not reach.

Is delivery included in the price?

Can I hire a digger with an operator?

How long can I hire for?

A day, a weekend, a week or longer. Days two and three normally bill at about two thirds of the first day, so a week is far better value per day than three separate days.

Straight answers

What we are honest about

  • We are a comparison and enquiry service, not a plant hire yard. We do not own the machines; we match you to depots that do.
  • Published rates are guidance drawn from UK yard prices, not a quote. Yours may fall outside them, and delivery is always extra.
  • Transport widths are typical for each class. Individual machines vary, so confirm the exact width with the yard if your access is tight.
  • Coverage thins in the Highlands, rural mid Wales and the far South West, where the nearest depot may be an hour away and delivery priced accordingly.
